To hire movers, or to move it ourselves?

We’re moving from Indiana to Boston. Our apartment is mostly furnished, so really it’s just all clothes, lots of books, our entire kitchen (which is a LOT), 2 bikes, many guitars and instruments, and knick knacks.

We have one car.

Do we hire movers, or do we rent a truck and move it ourselves? I don’t mind driving the stuff halfway across the country. It’s loading and unloading that I’m not keen on. Our apartment on this end … well it’s the apartment from hell moving-wise. It’s a long long way to get to anywhere you can park a truck, and there are many many stairs between point A and point B. This means no dollys or carts. Everything must be carried. Then, when we get to Boston, we’ve got to park a truck on a busy street and unload. We’re right in the middle of the city, not very moving-friendly, I’d think.

Anyone have experience with hiring movers? Did you regret it? Was it worth the money? Who did you use?
