NYC restaurant recs/other fun things to do:)

My boyfriend and I are going to NYC August 28th-Sept 3rd.  We’re going partially for his birthday because he has never been to NYC and partially for me since I haven’t been back to visit everyone since I moved away a year ago.  Anyway, I’m looking for a good restaurant to take him to on his birthday.  I know I lived up there for about 3 years, but I lived in Hoboken and didn’t frequently go out for nice dinners in the city.  He mentioned he’d like either Italian or possibly Mexican…but I’m open to anything you recommend that would give him a great birthday dinner.  We’ll be up there for 6 nights so numerous recommendations are welcomed (we’re staying at the Hotel Giraffe on 26th and park…but they don’t need to be near there…I’m a fan of soho and the west village:))…any other ideas of things we just have to do while we’re there are appreciated as well (I’m already planning on going to the Koons exhibit and maybe to see the waterfall installations)
