Book Review: Nights In Rodanthe

The latest book by Nicholas Sparks to be turned into a cinematic feature, Nights In Rodanthe is the dramatic story of a mother, trying to connect with her recently widowed daughter. Inviting her daughter over, she sits her down and begins to tell her story…

Adrienne Willis was middle aged housewife dealing with heartache after being abandoned by her husband for a younger woman. Needing time to clear a jumbled head and heart, she heads to Rodanthe, to tend an inn, owned by her close friend. Settling in, she learns that she has one guest to be arriving, and a terrible storm approaching.

Paul Flanner had just sold his practice, in hopes of fleeing his past. Arriving in at the inn, he finds Adrienne crying alone on the back porch, only to discover she is the acting inn keeper.

Preparing for the storm, the two engage in conversation, realizing that they both are trying for fresh starts. As the lightening, wind, and rain crash against the inn, Paul and Adrienne find solace in each other’s arms, only having to say goodbye a few short days later. Would it be forever?

Though somewhat cliched and predictable, Nights In Rodanthe is a touching story of love and loss, and having the courage to go on.

I give this book three out of five stars.
